| Fast Facts | AVAILABILITY NOTE This fish is only collected for the trade perhaps once every 1-3 years. Known only from around remote Easter Island, Chaetodon litus has one of the smallest distributions of all species of butterflies. Only a handful of specimens are collected perhaps every few years, and they do great in captivity, likely due to the relatively limited diversity of food sources at subtropical Easter Island. It's subdued coloration generates little interest from rare fish enthusiasts, although it's tiny range in nature and lack of similar looking species worldwide make it among the most unique of butterflies. The only species superfically resembling it are Chaetodon daedalma from Japan and Chaetodon nigropunctatus from the Persian Gulf, both of which most of us will never see or be able to afford!
